Kashmir in 1942

This specimen was lot 74063 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Kashmir. 1/2 Rupee, VS 1942 (1886). Pertab Singh (under Victoria as Empress). PCGS MS-61. A beautiful Mint State example, delivering rich details and a soft golden luster." This coin is a rupee struck VS 1942-1952. The auctioneers' error in calling this a half rupee is natural, as it is the weight of half a British India rupee. The Vikram Samvat calendar is 57 years ahead of the AD date altho it starts in April rather than January 1. Pratap (Pertab) Singh ruled 1884-1925.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.65 g, silver.

Catalog reference: KM-Y24.
