Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 2098

This specimen was lot 2098 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €300 (about US$390 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, KAMPEN, Stad, AV dukaat, 1653. Met titel van Ferdinand III (1637-1657). Vz/ Staande keizer r. met scepter en rijksappel. Kz/ Tekst in versierd vierkant. Deuken op vz. Fraai à Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, city of Kampen, gold ducat of 1653, struck in the name of Ferdinand III. Obverse: the emperor stands, with scepter and orb; reverse: text in square tablet. Dents in the obverse, Fine - Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1646-60 by the city of Kampen in the province of Overijssel. The coin was struck in the name of emperor Frederick III, who died in 1493. The States General battled the cities throughout the seventeenth century, alleging that the municipal mints were addicted to short weight and debased alloy. Finally, the States succeeded in closing all the municipal mints.
