Jhalawar VS1915/9 nazarana rupee
This specimen was lot 33300 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "Jhalawar. Prithvi Singh Nazarana Rupee VS 1915 Year 9 (1858) AU58 NGC. A piece which admits noticeably few flaws for the assigned grade, some very minor rub detectable on only the highest points of the devices. Mislabeled on the holder as Year 15. From the Engelen Collection of World Coinage." This type was struck VS 1915, years 2 thru 28. Nazarana rupees are wider and thinner than regular rupees. This tiny state issued an extensive series of hammered rupees and nazarana rupees. The round rupees are listed cheaply but the nazarana rupees have a high catalog value.
