Jhalawar (1895) 1/2 rupee
This specimen was lot 33301 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "Jhalawar. Zalim Singh 1/2 Rupee Year 38 (1895) MS64 NGC. Very rare both in terms of condition and as a type, likely struck as a transitional coinage between the reign of Zalim Singh and the conversion to British administration. Wonderfully struck with prominent die polish lines and luster, a few slight flan cracks noted on the reverse. From the Engelen Collection of World Coinage." This tiny state issued an extensive series of hammered rupees and nazarana rupees. The round rupees are listed cheaply but the nazarana rupees have a high catalog value. This type is listed for year 38 only.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, 5.60-5.65 g, 21-22 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-Y5a.
