Sincona sale 87, lot 2780

This specimen was lot 2780 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,347 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"JAPAN Akihito, seit 1989. 10000 Yen 2002, FIFA-Weltmeisterschaft in Japan und Südkorea. Polierte Platte. (empire of Japan, Akihito, since 1989, ten thousand yen of 2002, for the FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea. Choice Proof.)"

This World Cup was co-hosted by South Korea and Japan. The South Korean team made it to the semi-finals while Japan tied Belgium but was eliminated by Turkey.

Recorded mintage: 100,000.

Specification: 15.6 g, 0.999 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, this specimen 15.60 g.
