Japan 1986 10000 yen
This specimen was lot 75421 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAPAN. 10000 Yen, Year 61 (1986). Osaka Mint. Hirohito (Showa). NGC MS-67. Commemorating the 60th anniversary of reign. An awe-inspiring Superb Gem that belongs in a fine collection of modern Japanese coinage. Billowy mint frost abundantly rests across both sides, which remain remarkably close to pristine even for the lofty grade. Brilliant snowy surfaces have the lightest pale champagne tinting that is almost impossible to detect." If the mintage stated in the SCWC is correct, which we have cause to doubt, there is no justification for the price realized here. Silver does not circulate in Japan, so we assume every example of this type is still in existence in various dresser drawers and people's collections. This type was accompanied by a gold 100,000 yen.
Recorded mintage: 10,000,000.
Specification: 20 g, 0.999 fine silver, 35 mm diameter.
