Jamaica 1980 cent
This specimen was lot 73536 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $110. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAMAICA. Cent, 1980-FM. Franklin Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-67 Gold Shield. FAO issue. Dodecagonal shaped. Tied with just one other example for the finest in the PCGS census, this robust Gem offers a delightful matte nature on account of some die polishing. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." Altho Jamaica received her own coinage starting in 1869, she did not obtain her independence until 1962. Decimal coinage commenced in 1969. This type was struck in London and the Franklin mint 1975-2002. The auctioneers attributed this example to the Franklin mint but it lacks the "FM" mintmark under the arms, marking it a product of the Llantrisant mint. The reverse features the ackee fruit (Blighia sapida), the national fruit of Jamaica.
