Jamaica 1978 cent

from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73535

This specimen was lot 73535 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $90. The catalog description^[1] noted, "JAMAICA. Cent, 1978. PCGS SPECIMEN-65 Gold Shield. FAO issue. Dodecagonal shaped. Lustrous and highly shimmering, this Gem radiates with alluring beauty and is surpassed in the PCGS census by just three examples. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." Altho Jamaica received her own coinage starting in 1869, she did not obtain her independence until 1962. Decimal coinage commenced in 1969. This type was struck in London and the Franklin mint 1975-2002. The reverse features the ackee fruit (Blighia sapida), the national fruit of Jamaica.
