Jamaica 1977 cent
The first specimen was lot 72060 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $65. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAMAICA. Cent, 1977-FM. Franklin Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-64 Gold Shield. F.A.O. issue. Variety with wide legend letters. Extraordinarily lustrous and blazing, this untoned near-Gem is exceeded in the PCGS census by just two examples. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." The second specimen was lot 73534 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $115. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAMAICA. Cent, 1977-FM. Franklin Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-66 Gold Shield. KM-64. FAO issue. Dodecagonal shaped. Steely gray and exceptionally brilliant, this superb Gem radiates with beauty and is exceeded at PCGS by just one example. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." This specimen was issued 1975-96 and 2000 as part of the F.A.O. series. Jamaica in the Caribbean is not usually considered to be in need of food aid but its economy has suffered since the collapse of its sugar plantations in the mid-nineteenth century. This specimen is a product of the Royal Mint in London; the Franklin mint also struck this type (KM 68, narrow letters) for the sets it marketed in the seventies.
