This type was struck 1957-59 at the Rome mint for Italy. It is common despite being struck only three years. Numista states that the aluminum bronze alloy was contaminated with titanium, making it difficult to strike. When the denomination was revived in 1938, the new coin (KM 97.2) had a plain edge.

Recorded mintage: 80,550,000.

Specification: 3.6 g, aluminum bronze (92% Cu-6% Al-2% Ni), 21.25 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Pietro Giampaoli.
