Italy 1936-R 2 lire

Goldberg sale 109, lot 2795

This specimen was lot 2795 in Goldberg sale 109 (Los Angeles, January 2019), where it sold for $420. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Italy. 2 Lire, 1936-R. Year XIV. Vittorio Emanuele III. PCGS graded MS-64." This type was struck 1936-43. Only the first year was made in nickel; the later dates are stainless steel, either conventional 18-8 (nonmagnetic) or without the nickel alloy ("Acmonital", magnetic). Some of the WW2 dates are rare as they were melted down for the war effort.

Recorded mintage: 120,000.

Specification: 10 g, nickel, 29 mm diameter, plain edge.
