Italy 1935-R 5 lire
This specimen was lot 30522 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. 5 Lire, 1935-R. Rome Mint. Vittorio Emanuele III. NGC MS-66. Mintage: 50. A VERY RARE offering that was issued with the nominal value only, as it, along with other denominations, was struck merely for collectors. Furthering its appeal even more is a brilliant, highly dazzling nature to the luster, subtle burnished toning nearer the peripheries, and its status as the final year of issue for the type." This type was struck 1926-35 in large numbers but this date was struck only for presentation. This variety has edge lettering spelled "*FERT*" whereas the other (KM 67.2, not struck in 1934) has "**FERT**".
Specification: 5 g, 0.835 fine silver, 23 mm diameter.
Recorded Mintage: 50.
Catalog reference: KM-67.1.
