Ireland 1976 10 pence
This specimen was lot 23092 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRELAND. 10 Pence, 1976. Dublin Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-67 Gold Shield. Sharply detailed with gleaming fields. A near-perfect example of this highly elusive presentation striking." This type was struck 1969-86 as part of the decimalization of the Irish pound. The module matched that of the old florin. The size was reduced in 1993. Ireland adopted the euro in 2002 and all this coinage is obsolete. The Irish Currency Office in Dublin began production of currency in 1974 and coins in 1976; previously, these items had been contracted in Britain.
