from the Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75304

This specimen was lot 75304 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRELAND. Shilling, 1963. NGC MS-67. The finest certified example at NGC and it shows. Fully lustrous and stunning with steel gray surfaces and an impeccable strike." The final type of shilling (shown here), issued 1951-68, was copper-nickel. This date is fairly common tho the proofs are rare. We don't know why this example realized 67 times the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: 4,000,000.

Specification: 5.66 g, copper-nickel, 23.6 mm diameter.
