Iraq 1971 dinar
This specimen was lot 7484 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRAQ. Dinar, AH 1390/1971. PCGS PROOF-68 Cameo. Struck in silver, this heavily mirrored proof was struck in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Iraqi army. Cameoed devices and mirrored fields result in a striking Iraq issue." Iraq, long a part of the Ottoman Empire, was seized by the British at the end of World War One but then granted independence under a local monarchy which ruled until 1958. In 1973, Iraq was dominated by a military regime but Saddam Hussein had not yet taken over. This NCLT was accompanied by a gold five dinars.
