Sincona sale 85, lot 1281

This specimen was lot 1281 in Sincona sale 85 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 140 CHF (about US$189 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN, Reza Shah, 1304-1320 SH (1925-1941). 2 Rials 1310 SH (1931 AD), Tehran Mint. NGC MS61. From the Kian collection, auction SINCONA 49, October 2018, lot 311."

After Reza Pahlavi overthrew the Qajars and seized the throne for himself, he continued the old denominations for several years, substituting his name and adopting a new dating system. The SH calendar is a solar version of the Hegira calendar which, being lunar based, starts on a different date each year. This type was struck SH 1310-1313 and is common, altho this example realized five times the catalog value.

Specification: 10 g, 0.828 fine silver, 26 mm diameter.
