Stephen Album sale 50, lot 451

This specimen was lot 451 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAFAVID: 'Abbas I, 1588-1629, AV mithqal, Qazwin, AH999, bold strike, XF." The mithqal was a gold coin favored by the first Safavid shahs (Ismail I, Tahmasp I, Muhammad Khudabandah) but was superseded by the ashrafi during the reign of shah Abbas (1587-1629). This type was accompanied by a half mithqal (Fr-6c) and double mithqal (Fr-6a).
