Stephen Album sale 50, lot 2264

This specimen was lot 2264 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAFAVID: 'Abbas I, 1588-1629, AR 1/4 mithqal, Yazd, ND, type A, thus struck ca. AH996-1004; unpublished denomination, though it was cited by Rabino without any reference, VF, RRR." Friedberg, who notes half, single and double mithqals for Abbas, mentions this denomination only for Ismail (1502-24) and Tahmasp (1524-76). The ashrafi (3.5 g) superseded the mithqal later in Abbas' reign.
