Sincona sale 88, lot 55

This specimen was lot 55 in Sincona sale 88 (Zürich, May 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN, Hotak Dynasty, Taimur Shah, as Sultan, 1186-1207 AH (1772-1793). Shahi 1199 AH (1785), Mashhad Mint. Sehr seltenes Nominal, Vorzüglich, Leicht gereinigt; Very rare denomination. Extremely fine. Lightly cleaned. Purchased from Dr. Busso Peus, Frankfurt, in 2010."

Taimur Shah, second ruler of the Durranis, is listed in the SCWC under Afghanistan. Mashhad, the capital of the northeastern province of Khorasan, served as a buffer between the Zands in Iran and the Durranis in Afghanistan. This is a rare one year, one mint type struck while Taimur Shah occupied the city.
