Goldberg Sale 137, lot 1406
G137-1406r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1406 in Goldberg Sale 137 (Los Angeles, January 2024), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "Iran. ¼ Mohur, ND (AH1199). Yazd Mint. Taqi Khan Bafqi, AH1199-1201/ 1785-1787AD. Pop 1; 1 in 58. Only two graded at PCGS. PCGS graded AU-50." Taqi Khan Bafqi was governor of Yazd who set himself up as shah of Persia for a brief period 1785-87. The only coins of his mentioned in the SCWC are a silver rupi (KM A567) and this gold quarter mohur. It should bear the date AH 1199 which seems to be missing from this example. Dynastic conflicts among the Zands, Durranis and Qajars were weakening the state, which was coming under pressure from Russian imperialism.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.75 g, gold, this specimen 2.67 g.

Catalog reference: KM-567.
