Sincona sale 88, lot 127

This specimen was lot 127 in Sincona sale 88 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 2,500 CHF (about US$3,304 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN, Zand Dynasty, Abol-Fath Khan, 1193 AH (1779). 1/4 Mohur Ashrafi 1193 AH (1779), Isfahan Mint. Von grösster Seltenheit; Of the highest rarity. NGC MS64. Purchased from M. Saffar, London, in 2008."

Karim Khan was the founder and the only effective ruler of the Zands. Abol-Fath Khan (Persian: ابوالفتح خان زند) was one of his sons and was briefly (five months) shah of Iran while his uncle and various other relatives jockeyed for power. When his usefulness was at an end, he was deposed and blinded. He died in 1787, aged 32 years. This is one of the few coins extant struck in his name.
