Iran AH 1166 1/4 ashrafi
This specimen was lot 37 in Sincona sale 88 (Zürich, May 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"IRAN, Safavid Dynasty, Esma'il III. 1163-1169 AH (1750-1756). 1/4 Ashrafi 1166 AH (1753), Mazandaran Mint. Äusserst seltenes Nominal und Münzstätte, Gestopftes Loch; Extremely rare mint and denomination. NGC UNC Details. Plugged hole. Purchased from A. Shams, Frankfurt, in 1986."
Isma'il served as a puppet for Ali Mardan Khan Bakhtiari and later for the Zands. Ashrafis were struck for Azad Khan but none are listed for Isma'il III. The auctioneers catalogued this as a quarter ashrafi but the weight is closer to one-third ashrafi, perhaps as a result of the plug.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: gold, this specimen 1.11 g.
