Sincona sale 88, lot 60

This specimen was lot 60 in Sincona sale 88 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 950 CHF (about US$1,255 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN, Afsharid Dynasty, Nader Shah, as king, 1148-1160 AH (1735-1747). Ashrafi 1148/1149 AH (1735/1736), Qazvin Mint. Sehr selten, Etwas gewellt; Very rare. NGC UNC Details. Slightly wavy flan. Purchased from A. Saeedi, London, in 1999."

Nadir Shah was the power behind the throne in the last years of the Safavids. Finally, he tired of ruling thru puppets and seized the throne for himself in AH 1148. This gold ashrafi was minted when he first proclaimed himself shah. This type was also struck at Isfahan (KM 363.1), Mashhad (KM 363.2), Shiraz (KM 363.3) and Tabriz (KM 363.4); Qazvin is an unlisted mint.
