Sincona sale 88, lot 61

This specimen was lot 61 in Sincona sale 88 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 550 CHF (about US$727 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN, Afsharid Dynasty, Nader Shah, as king, 1148-1160 AH (1735-1747). 4 Shahi 1148 AH (1735), Isfahan Mint. "Giti Setan" type. Selten, Vorzüglich, Leicht gereinigt; Rare. Extremely fine. Lightly cleaned. Purchased from A. Shams, Frankfurt, in 1986."

Nadir Shah was the power behind the throne in the last years of the Safavids. Finally, he tired of ruling thru puppets and seized the throne for himself in AH 1148. This gold ashrafi was minted when he first proclaimed himself shah. This type was also struck at Kirman (KM 362.3), Mashhad (KM 362.4), Nakhjavan (KM 362.5), Qazvin (KM 362.6), Shiraz (KM 362.7) and Tiflis (KM 362.8).
