Sincona sale 92, lot 40

This specimen was lot 40 in Sincona sale 92 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,386 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN Afsharid Dynasty, Nader Shah, as king, 1148-1160 AH (1735-1747). 5 Shahi 1148/49 AH (1735/1736), Isfahan Mint. Vorzüglich-FDC. Leicht gereinigt, About Uncirculated, Lightly cleaned. Purchased from A. Shams, Frankfurt, in 1989."

Nadir Shah was the power behind the throne in the last years of the Safavids. Finally, he tired of ruling thru puppets and seized the throne for himself in AH 1148. This type B five shahi was struck at Isfahan AH 1149 only per the SCWC, with the type A five shahi (KM 362.2) noted for AH 1148. There are nine mints total for this type.
