Indore AH1222/2 rupee
The first specimen was lot 71043 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Indore. Nazarana Rupee, AH 1222, Year 2 (1808). PCGS AU-50 Secure Holder. Arabic legends. Slightly uneven strike, lightly toned with underlying luster in some of the protected areas." The second specimen was lot 38587 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[2] noted, "INDIA. Indore. Nazarana Rupee, AH 1222 Year 21 (1827). Indore Mint. Jaswant Rao (in the name of Muhammad Akbar II). NGC MS-62." Nazarana rupees were wider, thinner and generally better struck than regular "dump" rupees". Wikipedia comments, "Yashwant Rao Holkar (1776–1811), also known as Jaswantrao Holkar, belonging to the Holkar dynasty of the Maratha Confederacy, was the Prince of the Indore. He was a gifted military leader...." Altho later issues from this state were extensive, this one year type is hammered.
