India 1874-C rupee
This specimen was lot 33974 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $4,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "British India. Victoria Proof Restrike Rupee 1874-C PR63 PCGS, Calcutta mint. A reflective specimen, bearing glossy, gunmetal fields." This type was issued at Calcutta and Bombay 1874-76 in a bewildering array of varieties, including proofs, off-metal strikes and restrikes. The type is the largest silver denomination. It is distinguished from the type issued 1877-1901 by the obverse legend, "VICTORIA QUEEN" instead of "VICTORIA EMPRESS." The mintmark is at the center of the lotus flower at the bottom of the reverse.
