This specimen was struck for the republic of Iceland in 1970-80. The inflation of the 1960's and 1970's killed off the smaller denominations (one eyrir and five aurar in 1966, twenty-five aurar in 1967, ten aurar in 1974). New denominations were introduced, the ten kronur in 1967, the five kronur in 1969 and this fifty kronur in 1970. In 1981, the krona was reformed and 100 old krona = 1 new krona. The conspicuous lines on the obverse are die cracks, not scratches.
Recorded mintage: 200,000.
Specification: 12.38 g, copper-nickel, 30 mm diameter, reeded edge.
Catalog reference: KM 19.
