Iceland 1971 50 kronur
This specimen was lot 73003 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "ICELAND. 50 Krona, 1971. PCGS SPECIMEN-66 Gold Shield. This fully blazing and brilliant Gem--surpassed in the PCGS census by a sole example--features the Icelandic parliament building in Reykjavik on its obverse. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." This type was struck for the republic of Iceland in 1970-80. The inflation of the 1960's and 1970's killed off the smaller denominations (one eyrir and five aurar in 1966, twenty-five aurar in 1967, ten aurar in 1974). New denominations were introduced, the ten kronur in 1967, the five kronur in 1969 and this fifty kronur in 1970. In 1981, the krona was reformed and 100 old krona = 1 new krona.
Recorded mintage: 500,000.
Specification: 12.38 g, copper-nickel, 30 mm diameter.
