Hyderabad AH 1358(30) 4 annas
This specimen was lot 73622 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Hyderabad. 4 Annas, AH 1358//Year 30 (1939). Hyderabad Mint. Mir Osman Ali Khan (under George VI as Emperor). NGC MS-65. Wonderful iridescent tone depicts sapphire, pinkish-rose, and amber coloration over a magenta gray base. A nice strike generously fills both legends and the Char Minar gateway with ample detail. Eye appealing, lustrous, and free of distracting marks or blemishes, this delightful Hyderabad minor is sure to satisfy." The princely state of Hyderabad was one of the last absorbed into the Republic of India in 1948. It was also the largest state and residence of the last remnant of Mughal suzerainty in central India. Many of the issues, including this one, show the Chahar Minar gateway on the obverse. This type was struck intermittently AH 1337-1358 but none of the dates are expensive. Four annas made one quarter rupee.
