Hungary 1993-BP 10000 forint
This specimen was lot 33980 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold Proof 10000 Forint 1993-BP. A charming Proof coin commemorating the Centennial death of Hungarian composer Ferenc Erkel. In issued capsule with blue plastic box and COA. Mintage of only 5,000 pieces." Hungary went thru many vicissitudes after the collapse of the Dual Monarchy in 1918. Hungary became independent but was shorn of its territories in Slovakia, Transylvania and Croatia. She fell under the dictatorship of Admiral Horthy and was a reluctant ally of Germany during World War Two, for which she was devastated by the Russian Red Army. This coin was issued by the post-Communist regime.
