Hungary 1948-BP 20 forint
This specimen was lot 198 in Schulman auction 389 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it sold for €45 (about US$64 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Hungary - 50 Forint 1948, Silver, THE REGENCY 1920-1946 100th anniversary of birth of Táncsics Mihály. Head left. Rev. arms. Ex Cherry Tree Collection. PCGS MS64." This is a twenty forint, not a fifty forint. Mihály Táncsics (21 April 1799 – 28 June 1884) was a Hungarian writer, teacher, journalist and politician. This was one of the last issues of the second Republic of Hungary before it was converted into the People's Republic in August 1949. Elections after Hungary's surrender in 1945 showed a landslide victory for the Independent Smallholder's Party but by subversion, intimidation and fraud, the communists were able to obtain the levers of power.
