Hungary 1887-KB 8 forint
This type was issued for Hungary 1880-90 from the Kremnitz (Komoczbanya in Magyar) mint during the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria-Hungary. The denomination was struck 1870-92 to match the standard of the French twenty francs d'or. Most dates are common. After the reorganization of the Hapsburg empire into the Dual Monarchy in 1867, Hungary received her own coinage separate from Austrian issues. In the aftermath of World War One, the Hapsburg monarchy collapsed and Hungary became independent but without its former territories in Slovakia, Transylvania and Croatia. This specimen was lot 1405 in Jean Elsen sale 120 (Brussels, March 2014), where it sold for €150 (about US$247 including buyer's fees. The catalog description[1] noted,
"HONGRIE, François Joseph Ier (1848-1916), AV 8 forint/ 20 francs, 1887 KB, Kremnitz. Très Beau. (Hungary, Francis Joseph, 1848-1916, gold eight florins or twenty francs of 1887, Kremnitz mint. Very fine.)"
