Hungary 1886-KB 8 forint
This specimen was lot 46550 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "HUNGARY. 8 Forint (20 Francs), 1886-KB. Kremnica Mint. Franz Joseph I. PCGS MS-63. The sole finest certified by PCGS." This type was issued for Hungary 1880-90 from the Kremnitz (Komoczbanya in Magyar) mint during the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria-Hungary. The denomination was struck 1870-92 to match the standard of the French twenty francs d'or. Most dates are common. After the reorganization of the Hapsburg empire into the Dual Monarchy in 1867, Hungary received her own coinage separate from Austrian issues. In the aftermath of World War One, the Hapsburg monarchy collapsed and Hungary became independent but without its former territories in Slovakia, Transylvania and Croatia.
