H3098-33948r.jpg

This specimen was lot 33948 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hungary: Ferdinand III Taler 1651-KB MS63 NGC, Kremnitz mint. Remarkably glassy throughout lustrous obverse surfaces, the reverse nearly dripping with mint brilliance that grips the double-headed eagle's torso and crisp legends. Lightly toned throughout, with noteworthy golden iridescence." This type was struck without change 1637-61, rendering it one of the more common thalers of the period. The SCWC correctly catalogs this under Hungary, not Austria. Hungary in the 1650's was partitioned between the Austrians and the Turks and was not part of the Empire.

Recorded mintage: 305,000.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM 107, Dav-3198.
