Hungary 1583-NB thaler Dav-8067
This specimen was lot 3827 in Sincona sale 39 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 1,600 CHF (about US$1,919 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA, Rudolf II. 1576-1612 Taler 1583. Nagybanya Das B des Mzz. spiegelverkehrt; alle A der Rs. ohne Querstrich. Vorzüglich. Kleiner Stempelfehler. (kingdom of Hungary, Rudolph II, 1576-1612, thaler of 1583, Nagybánya mint. Extremely fine.)"
The Hapsburg ruler styled himself king of Hungary but actually ruled only a slice near the Austrian border, the remainder being divided between the Ottoman Turks and the prince of Transylvania. Davenport lists this type for 1580, 1582, 1583 and 1585. It is much rarer than the product of the Kremnitz mint (Dav-8066).
