Hong Kong 1981 1000 dollars
This specimen was lot 72317 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, ""HONG KONG. 1000 Dollars, 1981. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. Lunar Series, Year of the Cock. An exceptionally pleasing Gem, featuring frosted devices and highly mirrored fields." In 1976, Hong Kong commenced a series of gold commemoratives featuring the animals of the Chinese zodiac. This one, the sixth in the series, honors the year of the Rooster. British coinage for Hong Kong ceased in 1997 when the island was returned to China. In 1982, the Hong Kong dollar was worth US$0.17.
