This specimen was lot 4952 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $833.75. The catalog description[2] noted, "Hong Kong. 1000 Dollars, 1982. Elizabeth II. Year of the Dog. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated." In 1976, Hong Kong commenced a series of gold commemoratives featuring the animals of the Chinese zodiac. This one, the seventh in the series, honors the year of the Dog. British coinage for Hong Kong ceased in 1997 when the island was returned to China.
Recorded mintage: 33,000 uncirculated plus 22,000 proofs.
