This specimen was lot 34238 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hong Kong: British Colony. Elizabeth II gold "Year of the Monkey" 1000 Dollars 1980 MS69 NGC." In 1976, Hong Kong commenced a series of gold commemoratives featuring the animals of the Chinese zodiac. This one, the fifth in the series, honors the year of the Monkey. British coinage for Hong Kong ceased in 1997 when the island was returned to China. In 1982, the Hong Kong dollar was worth US$0.17.
