Honduras 1920 centavo
The first specimen was lot 1053 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "Honduras, bronze 1 centavo, 1920, no CENTAVOS, PCGS XF40(BN), finest and only example in PCGS census, ex-Dana Roberts. Slightly crude strike as usual, the obverse well preserved but the reverse with small marks and wear but clear 9/9 and 0/0 in date (unlisted, possibly rare), apparently the only example graded at either PCGS or NGC Pedigreed to the Dana Roberts collection (stated on label)." The second specimen was lot 72552 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[2] noted, "HONDURAS. Centavo, 1920. Tegucigalpa Mint. PCGS MS-63 Brown. This two year type was used in circulation, and virtually never put aside. To find a Mint State specimen is a special treat. Little value in lower grades, but most desirable in MS 63." This is the last centavo of the peso system. In 1931, Honduras abandoned the peso, closed her mint and introduced the lempira, minted under contract in Philadelphia.
Reported Mintage: 30,000.
Specification: 2.12 g, bronze, 20 mm diameter.
