Stack's Bowers May 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 34200
SB524-34200r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34200 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "HONDURAS. Peso, 1889. Tegucigalpa Mint. PCGS AU-55. Despite some time in circulation, this Peso retains good allure, with soft toning and underlying brilliance." This type was issued in Honduras 1883-1903 and 1914 and usually comes poorly struck. It is much commoner than the earlier KM 51, issued 1881-83. Varieties, overdates, etc., abound. The 1889/8 is listed as much more common than the plain 1889. The peso was dropped in favor of the lempira in 1931.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-52.
