Holland 1609 daalder Dav-4858
This specimen was lot 75530 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Holland. Lion Dollar (Daalder), 1609. NGC EF-40. An appealing Extremely Fine specimen with rich details and handsome eye appeal." The leeuwendaalder and its half are famous in the numismatic world as being some of the worst struck coins in history. Most of the provinces and several of the cities struck them from the 1570's until the end of the seventeenth century. The SCWC lists this subtype for Holland for 1606-17, 1621-55, 1658-68, 1674-76, 1679-80, 1683-87, 1697. The earlier type (Dav-4856) had the date at the bottom of the reverse.
