Holland (1429-30) chaise d'or Fr-119
This specimen was lot 990 in Jean Elsen sale 163 (Brussels, November 2025), where it sold for €850 (about US$982 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, HOLLAND, Graafschap, Philips de Goede, ruwaard (1425-1433), AV gouden schild klinkaert, 1429-1430, Zevenbergen. Met initiaalteken ster op kz. Vz/ De gekroonde vorst gezeten in een gotisch baldakijn, met zwaard en wapenschild. Kz/ Gebloemd kruis in een vierpas. Zeldzaam. Geslagen te Zevenbergen tussen 29 april 1429 en 13 mei 1430, met als kenmerk een zespuntige ster aan het begin van het omschrift op de keerzijde. Op de klinkaerts van Filips de Goede geslagen te Dordrecht begint de legende met een kruis op voorzijde en keerzijde. (Netherlands, county of Holland, Philip the Good, gold shield, circa 1429-30, Zevenbergen mint. Obverse: the crowned duke seated under a Gothic canopy, with sword and shield; reverse: floriate cross in a quadrilobe. Struck at Zevenbergen between 29 April 1429 and 13 May 1430, characterised by a six-pointed star at the beginning of the legend on the reverse. On those of Philip the Good struck at Dordrecht, the legend begins with a cross on the obverse and reverse. Fine - Very Fine.)"
This chaise d'or was issued from Zevenbergen (star mintmark) instead of the usual Dordrecht mint (cross mintmark). It lacks the "x JACOB x" at the bottom of the obverse which proclaimed Philip the Good to be the regent for his cousin Jacqueline, countess of Hainaut.
