This specimen was lot 3885 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $483. The catalog description [2] noted, "German States - Hesse. 20 Marks, 1901-A. Ernst Ludwig. Harshly cleaned. Very Fine." This type was struck 1896-1903 at the Berlin mint and is rather scarce in circulated condition. Ernest Louis was the last grand duke of Hesse, abdicating upon the collapse of the German Empire in 1918.
