Hesse-Darmstadt 1758-R thaler Dav-2322
This specimen was lot 32207 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hesse-Darmstadt. Ludwig VIII Taler 1758-R MS65 NGC. Very likely, far and away, the finest known for this rare type. Beautiful old cabinet toning with significant residual luster and a bold strike. There have been only 3 examples of this Davenport number on the open market in the past decade, or so, and this easily outshines them all. When one encounters a coin that has a combination of condition and rarity such as this, price history and comparable auction results become almost meaningless; to buy the finest known example of a type, one should be prepared to pay a commensurate price, and we fully expect to see that with this coin." The landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt issued numerous thalers in the eighteenth century (Dav-2313 thru -2339) but most are seldom seen. This type was also issued in 1751 but both dates are rare.
