Steve Album sale 51, lot 2936

This specimen was lot 2936 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "HESSE-DARMSTADT: Ernst Ludwig, 1678-1739, AR 2 albus, Darmstadt, 1694, initials IAR, bold strike, lustrous, PCGS graded MS63." The coinage of this state prior to the mid-eighteenth century is very scanty. This type was struck 1692-97 and 1703-08. It was accompanied by a single albus. Two albus was one-fifteenth thaler. The initials IAR stand for Johann Adam Rephun, mintmaster at Darmstadt 1693-1705.
