Sincona sale 101, lot 2472

This specimen was lot 2472 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Hessen-Kassel, Landgrafschaft, ab 1803 Kurfürstentum, Karl, 1670-1730, bis 1677 unter Vormundschaft seiner Mutter Hedwig Sophie von Brandenburg. 4 Dukaten 1727, Kassel. Auf die 200-Jahrfeier der Universität Marburg. Stempel von G. Le Clerk. Sehr selten. Fast vorzüglich. Randfehler. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Cassel, Charles, 1670-1730, until 1677 under the regency of his mother Hedwig Sophie von Brandenburg, four ducats of 1727, Cassel mint, on the bicentennial of the university of Marburg. Dies by G. LeClerc. Very rare, About Extremely Fine, Edge flaw.)"

The SCWC incorrectly attributes this to 1777 and says it was issued for the fiftieth anniversary of the landgrave's reign. Goldberg sold one (sale 5, Jon Kardatzke Coin Collection, June 2000, lot 3961) and said it was a medal. Heritage sold one that they said was a triple ducat. It does not seem to be listed in Friedberg.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 13.72 g.

Catalog reference: KM 513, Müller 2442.
