Künker Auction 425, lot 2188

This specimen was lot 2188 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,275 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · HESSEN-KASSEL, LANDGRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1803 KURFÜRSTENTUM Wilhelm V., 1627-1637. Reichstaler 1634, Kassel. Weidenbaumtaler. Feine Tönung, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Cassel, William V, 1627-37, "willow" thaler of 1634, Cassel mint. Fine toning, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The landgrave issues several thalers in 1634, including KM 115.5/Dav-6749 (shown here), KM 115.6/Dav-6746 (God's wrath) and KM 141/Dav-6748 (bust obverse). The obverse, depicting a willow tree buffeted by a storm, is an allegory of the devastation wreaked by imperial forces on the landgrave's domain during the Thirty Years War.
