This specimen was lot 995 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it sold for $646.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "HEJAZ: al-Husayn b. 'Ali, 1916-1924, AE ghirsh (4.11g), Makka al-Mukarrama (Mecca), AH1334 year 8. Lovely strike, traces of original luster, EF to About Unc, R." This type was struck for the Kingdom of Hejaz, now the western part of Saudi Arabia, in the early 1920's. The coinage of Hejaz was initially comprised of countermarked coins from Turkey and Maria Teresa Thalers, with later regular issues until Hejaz was eventually assimiliated into Saudi Arabia.
