This specimen was lot 997 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[1] noted, "HEJAZ: al-Husayn b. 'Ali, 1916-1924, AR 20 ghirsh, Makka al-Mukarrama (Mecca), AH1334 year 9. Lightly cleaned, About Unc. Year 9 is much rarer than year 8, especially for early strikes, such as this piece, before the use of worn dies." This type was struck for the Kingdom of Hejaz, now the western part of Saudi Arabia, in the early 1920's. The coinage of Hejaz was initially comprised of countermarked coins from Turkey and Maria Teresa Thalers, with later regular issues until Hejaz was eventually assimiliated into Saudi Arabia.
